How to Get Your Kid Started in Cricket

February 18, 20267 min readSterling, VA

Plenty of parents in Sterling and Loudoun County did not grow up watching or playing cricket, and the sport can feel unfamiliar - different equipment, different terms, different pace than baseball or soccer. That is fine. You do not need to understand the rules to get your child started; you need a program built for beginners and a coach who will meet your child where they are.

Here is a straightforward path from first interest to a first season at Revolution Cricket Academy.

Step 1: Figure out the right starting point

The single most useful piece of information is your child's age, because it determines which program they start in.

  • Ages 5–8: Blast Ball Cricket - soft ball, game-based, no prior experience needed
  • Ages 8–11: Smash Ball Cricket - for kids ready to move toward hardball and real technique
  • U13/U15: Bring It On Cricket - for players ready for competitive, tournament-based training
  • U17/U19: Out of My Way Cricket - for serious players pursuing regional or national pathways

Step 2: Book a free trial

The easiest way to know if your child will enjoy cricket is to watch them try it. Revolution Cricket Academy offers a free trial session, which lets a coach see where a child's coordination and confidence are and lets your child feel out the sport with no pressure. Call (202) 834-7800 or book online to set one up.

Step 3: Understand what a first session covers

A first Blast Ball or Smash Ball session is not a test - it is an introduction. Expect throwing and catching games, basic batting swings with a soft ball, and simple fielding positions explained in plain language. Coaches are used to working with children who have never picked up a cricket bat.

Step 4: Basic gear (what you actually need early on)

Beginners do not need to buy a full cricket kit before starting. In the early Blast Ball stage, the academy's soft-ball equipment covers most of what a session needs. As players progress toward Smash Ball and hardball cricket, coaches will advise on the specific gear - bat size, gloves, pads - appropriate to your child's age and stage rather than a generic list bought in advance.

Step 5: Decide on lane time versus group programs

Group programs (Blast Ball through Out of My Way) are the main way kids learn and improve. Families who want extra practice reps outside of scheduled program hours can also rent one of the academy's three indoor cricket lanes by the hour, open to all ages and abilities.

Lane 2Club-grade tufted matting$60 / hour

Step 6: Set expectations for the first season

Cricket rewards patience more than most sports kids in this area are used to. Encourage your child to focus on fun and fundamentals in the first few weeks rather than results. Coaches track progress across sessions, and most of what looks like a slow start is completely normal for a sport this different from soccer or baseball.
